INTERROGATING THE REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES FOR INMATES IN OKAKA PRISON
ALFRED S. EKPEYONG AND EBITIMI AMBAKA ALEX
Abstract
In modern correctional settings, the challenge of effectively rehabilitating inmates and facilitating their successful reintegration into society looms large; necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. The study investigates the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes for inmates at Okaka Prison in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, with a focus on the impact of these programs on inmates’ reintegration into society. The relevance of Labeling Theory is discussed in understanding inmates’ criminal behaviours and their challenges in societal reintegration. Adopting a cross-sectional survey design, the research includes data from 275 inmates and 21 key informant interviews, utilising multi-stage sampling techniques. Data analysis, using the Chi-square test of independence and SPSS version 21.0, highlights the significant impact of vocational courses, counselling, and educational training on inmates, emphasizing their importance over parole, probation, punishment, and moral education. Positive staff-inmate relationships are also noted, contributing to successful rehabilitation. Recommendations include expanding ICT-driven vocational courses, promoting gender-inclusive training, and fostering positive warder-inmate relationships for enhanced rehabilitation outcomes and societal integration.
