Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of Yoruba culture and traditions on promoting moral values, ethics, behaviour, and social responsibility among Oyo State primary school pupils for Sustainable Development Goals. The study employed a descriptive survey research design to gather data from primary school teachers. A total of 200 respondents were selected through convenience sampling technique that cut across both public and private schools in various local government areas in the study area. To ensure validity, the questionnaire underwent expert review in Education and Yoruba culture, followed by a pilot study with 20 respondents from a neighbouring state for clarity refinement; reliability, assessed via Cronbach’s alpha which yielded a coefficient of 0.85, indicating high internal consistency. The data were analysed using mean and standard deviations to answer the research questions. The results of the descriptive analysis indicate that teachers generally support the view that Yoruba culture and traditional values contribute positively to pupils’ ethical behaviour. The high mean scores and the consistent agreement among teachers highlight the positive impact of integrating Yoruba cultural values into the curriculum, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that emphasise holistic and inclusive education. This study underscores the importance of preserving and incorporating cultural heritage into educational practices to foster a generation of morally upright and socially responsible individuals.
