Abstract
The assumption in this article is that Syria by reason of its history, location, resources, ethnic and socio-religious composition, cannot but be a candidate of International politics and intrigues. It is therefore not surprising that the country became the quintessential trouble-spot in the Middle East. For us to truly appreciate the importance of the factors mentioned above, it is necessary that we once again go into history in order to locate the remote causes of the crisis in Syria. Furthermore, the social and political contexts of the crisis are examined, but more importantly, the involvement of external interests and the implications for regional, as well as global peace and security. The article concludes after examining the myriad of and machinations of external interests by stating that the emerging reality is that both the western powers as well as opposing global powers, and the Government of Syria will have to find some way of eliciting a negotiated settlement that does not necessarily satisfy the objectives of the major external actors. Resolving the crisis and its consequences for global peace and security supersedes all other interests at this stage
