UNDERSTANDING BIRD STRIKE RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES, AND THE PLACE OF SUBSIDY IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY: EXAMPLES FROM PORT HARCOURT AND BAYELSA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS

Abstract
Hazards, whether natural or man-made are better averted when the level of their awareness is reasonably high. Moreover, the aversion becomes effective if the cost of their solution measures is being subsidized especially for those ones that are complex in nature. This work which is titled, understanding bird strike risks and consequences and the place of subsidy, in the aviation industry is aimed at investigating into the level of awareness of the bird strike hazard and whether there is subsidized cost in its solution measures. To achieve this aim, the following objectives were stated; (i)To identify the types of bird strikes in the study areas (ii) To determine the causes of likely bird strikes in the study area (iii)To assess the level of awareness of types and causes birds strikes by the staff and neighbourhood of the study area and (iv) To identify the mitigating measures applied with subsidy from government. The findings in the work unveiled the high level of un-awareness in the types and causes of bird strike by those in the vicinity, and by some staff, with 98% against 40% of un-awareness. It was also discovered in the field that, there is no subsidy measure applied on effective solution measures. The study therefore recommended for adequate training and employment of safety and wildlife managers with subsidy application.
