ECONOMIC CRISIS AND BRAIN DRAIN IN NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT

Akamike Joseph Okechukwu and Okonkwo N. Osmond

Abstract
Nigeria is a country that faces many challenges in its development, such as poverty, corruption, insecurity, and poor infrastructure. One of the most pressing issues is the brain drain, which is the emigration of highly skilled and educated people to other countries where they can find better opportunities and living standards. This phenomenon has negative impacts on the economic growth, human capital, and social welfare of Nigeria, as it deprives the country of its vital human resources and potential leaders. This paper examines the causes, effects, and implications of brain drain on the economic development of Nigeria, and suggests some possible solutions to address this problem. The paper argues that Nigeria needs to improve the conditions of service, social security, and quality of life for its professionals, as well as invest in education, health, and technology, to create a conducive environment for them to stay and contribute to the country’s development.
