ASSESSMENT OF THE SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC STATUS OF DIABETIC ELDERLY RESIDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study investigated the socio-demographic and economic status as its influence health related Quality of Life (QoL) and compliance level of elderly diabetic patient’s residents in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Objectives of the study were to examine the influence of gender on the Quality of Life of diabetic elderly persons, it also investigated the influence of educational levels on the quality of Life of diabetic elderly persons and assessment of the influence of income levels on the quality of Life of diabetic elderly persons residents in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Quantitative research study was carried out in the study area. The population of 200 elderly diabetic patients aged 50 years and above were purposively selected for the study. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage. The study found out that gender does not affect the Quality of Life of Diabetic Elderly patients and it also established that socio-demographic factorss such as age and occupation may have no significant impact on the Quality of Life among elderly diabetic patients’ resident in Oredo. In light of the findings of the research recommended that the Elderly should be educated on how to save against the raining day before retirement, Doctors and Nurses should intensify their efforts in educating people on how they can avoid things that may make the Elderly vulnerable to diabetes, those who are diabetic should take their drugs regularly and there should be adequate social support for elderly living with diabetes in Oredo local Government Area and Nigeria at large.
