COMMUNITY PERCEPTION OF OIL RESOURCE OWNERSHIP AND CLIMATE CHANGE DYNAMICS IN THE NIGER DELTA

Abstract
The objective of this paper was to investigate and document perception of locals on oil wealth ownership and artisanal refining and their implications on climate change. In addition, the paper explored the local understanding of climate change and willingness for mitigation and adaption in relation to ownership differences between communities and the state. Relying on a single case method triangulated with secondary sources, the research focused on Igbomotoru community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, through direct observation and surveys. This was analysed with the aid of simple percentage and the Nvivo qualitative method of data analysis. The findings showed that community perception of resource ownership undermines climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts
